Author Interview: Lizzy Charles

Today for my Author Interview Series, I have Lizzy Charles, who's book Effortless With You came out yesterday.

JS:  Your book EFFORTLESS WITH YOU came out yesterday. Congratulations! Can you tell us a little about it?
LC:  Thank you so much! It’s a surreal experience. I’d love to tell you about my novel. EFFORTLESS WITH YOU is about sixteen year old Lucy who’s prepped for the perfect summer. But after landing in trouble one too many times, her parents deal her the ultimate punishment: a summer job painting with Justin, the most popular, egotistical guy in school. Justin’s a jerk, but as Lucy’s intricately crafted social persona falls apart, she realizes that maybe there’s more to Justin than she thought. One thing’s for certain: it’s not the summer she wanted, but it might be exactly the one she needs.

JS:  How did you get the idea for this book?
LC:  I loved the dynamic in Pride and Prejudice of Lizzy detesting Darcy. I wanted to write a novel that began with this conflict and edge, allowing the characters to unravel into their own unique relationship.

JS:  Is this book a stand alone or will this be a series?
LC:  Stand alone.

JS:  How long did it take you to write this book?
LC:  From first sentence to release date? Three years.
JS:  Did you always want to be a writer and when did you decide to become one?
LC:  I’ve always wanted to be a writer, but, not surprisingly, I never managed to write a book until I decided to become one.

JS:  How many query letters did you send out?
LC:  Oh man, between thirty and fifty. Unfortunately, my original query list disappeared with a computer crash. So I don’t know the exact number.

JS:  What are you working on now?
LC:  It’s top secret! But I can say it’s a young adult contemporary romance that involves the smell of cow poop. ;-)

JS:  What’s your favorite thing about being a writer?
LC:  I love getting lost in the story and discovering new things about my characters along the way.

JS:  Is Effortless With You the first book you’ve ever written?
LC:  Yes.

JS:  What advice would you give to aspiring authors?
LC:  Don’t give up, but don’t be foolish. If something isn’t getting a good response, figure out why. Find critique partners and compile writing resources (and use their suggestions!). Also, reach out to other authors. The writing community is incredibly supportive. Beta read and critique manuscripts. You’ll learn so much about writing, voice, and pacing that way. It’ll give you new eyes for your own manuscript.

Random Questions
1. Vanilla or chocolate? Chocolate.
2. Coffee or tea? Tea. Always black.
3. Beach or snow? Beach
4. Last book read? Friday Night Alibi by Cassie Mae 5. Favorite author? J.K. Rowling
6. Most played song on iPod? Beautiful Things by Gungor.
7. Favorite movie? Oo! This one is so tough. That totally depends on my mood. At this exact moment, I’d want to watch Crazy, Stupid, Love. How’s that?
8. Outliner or panster? Combination. I jot the general idea of where each chunk needs to go, but I let it develop as well. My outlines are usually just one word points.
9. Flats or heels? Flats. After taking a break from heels for a year while pregnant, I haven’t relearned how to walk in them without looking like a fool.
10.Lipstick or chapstick? Chapstick.

Jessica, thank you so much for having me! I loved your questions. They were so much fun!

When Lizzy Charles isn’t scrambling to raise her two spunky toddlers or caring for premature and sick babies as a neonatal intensive care nurse, she’s in a quiet corner writing or snuggled up with a novel and a few squares of dark chocolate. Black tea keeps her constant and she loves guacamole. She married her high school sweet heart, a heart-melting musician, so it’s no surprise she’s fallen in love with writing contemporary YA romance novels.

SWITCHED Cover Reveal

Cassie Mae is taking my blog over again for the day. She has some more great news... Another cover reveal! Congrats, Cassie. I'm so happy for you.

Yay! Tis time for another cover from yours truly.

Covers are the best part. Not gonna lie. So... time for the booty shake!

Are you reading still? I'm wondering how many of you have scrolled down to the hot guy down there. (Because, I admit, I do this) Hmm... testing... tell me your favorite color in the comments if you read this part! LOL.

Here's my stuff, and the book blurb and all that:

Cassie Mae is a nerd to the core from Utah, who likes to write about other nerds who find love. She’s the author of the Amazon Bestseller REASONS I FELL FOR THE FUNNY FAT FRIEND, and is the debut author for the Random House FLIRT line with her New Adult novels FRIDAY NIGHT ALIBI and SWITCHED. She also has a three book deal with Swoon Romance Publishing, including her book HOW TO DATE A NERD. She spends time with her angel children and perfect husband who fan her and feed her grapes while she clacks away on the keyboard. Then she wakes up from that dream world and manages to get a few words on the computer while the house explodes around her. When she’s not writing, she’s spending time with the youth in her community as a volleyball and basketball coach, or searching the house desperately for chocolate.

SWITCHED:

Cassie Mae redefines the New Adult genre with a novel that answers the eternal question: What do you do when you’re head-over-heels for your best friend’s guy?

Ever since high school, Kayla has been crazy for gorgeous football player Talon. But before she could muster the courage to tell him, he became a hot item with her beautiful BFF, Reagan. The only person who knows Kayla’s secret is Wesley, Talon’s best bud—and he’s got it bad for Reagan. Now they’re all in college together, hanging out 24/7. For Kayla, seeing the two lovebirds together is absolutely unbearable. So Kayla and Wesley hatch a plot to drive them apart. But time is ticking and they must act now, before Talon gives Reagan the Christmas gift she’s been waiting for.

Sure enough, the once-happy couple is fighting, Reagan suddenly can’t get enough of Wesley’s goofy sense of humor, and Talon seems to be paying more attention to Kayla than a guy who’s “just a friend” ever should. But something just isn’t right. Then Kayla and Wesley accidentally spend a night together, and discover a hitch they never considered: that switching partners may not lead to a perfect ending after all.

And now... the reveal

*dramatic drumroll!*

Okay, I love all my covers. But that guy, I can't stop looking at him. The girl is a perfect replica of Kayla too. So this makes me a happy pappy author :D

Spell for the day:

Incendio!

What do you think of the cover? Read any of Cassie's books? Have a great week!

IWSG: Measuring Up

This is my post for the Insecure Writer's Support Group. It's a group thought up by the ninja himself, Alex J. Cavanaugh. The group posts the first Wednesday of every month and is a wonderful way to support and get encouragement from and for your fellow writers. If you would like to join the group or see the other blogs that participate in it go HERE.

I'm excited, nervous, thrilled, honored, and scared out of my mind. A couple months ago the wonderful a writer friend of mine announced that she wanted to selfpub a anthology of YA Christmas short stories this year and if was anyone interested. I immediately jumped at the chance.

But A: I've never written a short story and B: people will actually read something I've written.

I signed up to be part of the group, there's five of us total. Fast forward a couple months and the short is now written and we are passing them around to each other for critiques.

And I, of course like any good self doubting writer, am freaking out. All the other writer's are flippen amazing. What if my story doesn't measure up to the other's? What if people read the book and think it's great...all except for my story.

When you get to the point of achieving your dream of being published and having people actually read your stuff why is it so darn scary?

Cover Reveal: (Never) Again

Congratulations to Theresa! Today is the official cover reveal for her book (Never)Again to be published by (Berkley) Penguin on October 15th, 2013.

(Never) Again:

…He moved back.

When college freshman Liz Wagner hears her ex's voice for the first time since he moved clear across the freaking country, she does what any respectable girl would do: Dive into the girls' bathroom.

Zach Roberts—the Zach Roberts—is back. And he’s everywhere Liz looks—infiltrating her friend group, buddy-buddy with her brother. It’s enough to ruin college altogether. But what choice does she have but to put on a happy face and pretend he didn't leave her vulnerable and alone in a pile of emotional wreckage?

Pretending works, until tragedy strikes and the only person available for comfort is the one person she wants to stay away from. When Zach turns out not to be the jerk she convinced herself he was, but the boy she used to love, Liz needs to decide whether to open her heart again to the boy who tore it out.

Theresa Paolo lives in the same town she grew up in on Long Island, NY with her boyfriend and Milton, their big eyed goldfish. She has a hard time accepting the fact she’s nearing thirty which is why she writes New Adult and Young Adult books, reliving the best and worst years of her life through her characters. She put her love of writing on hold while she received her Bachelor’s Degree in Marketing from Dowling College. On November 11th 2011 at 11:11 she made a wish. Two hours later she was laid off. Jobless for the first time since she was sixteen she was determined to make her wish come true. Writing became her life again and after many nights of ignoring her boyfriend to spend time with her characters, she finally received the call that all her hard work, finger crossing and eye crossing paid off. She signed with Berkley (Penguin) and her debut novel, (NEVER) AGAIN, a NA romance, will be out in Fall 2013.  When she’s not writing, she’s behind a camera or can be found in the blogosphere or on Twitter, Pinterest and Facebook.
